Richmond Chiropractor : Paul Danford (Chiropractor)
"The Last Resort"
The type of patient I relish are those that tell me they've been everywhere, seen everyone, done everything and nothing seems to help. To say they're sceptical about Chiropractic is an understatement.
The fact that they've already pursued the conventional route means that anything sinister that may be causing their symptoms has been ruled out and therefore their complaint is likely to be of a mechanical nature as the medical profession do not consider mechanical disorders of the spine/pelvis as a cause of spinal symptoms.
It always gives me great pleasure to be able to tell those patients........Yes we can help you and then we do! Even when their GP or specialist has told them "You'll have to live with it," "Take these pills" or the only solution is "Surgery".
Why Chiropractic?
At the age of 15, I suffered horrendous lower back and leg pains after lifting a suitcase while holidaying with my parents in France. Once back in the UK I saw my GP on numerous occasions and took painkillers for months; nothing helped. Eventually I saw a specialist who suggested an operation, something I did not relish at such a young age. As a last resort, my father took me along to see his Chiropractor, within two weeks I was free of pain and back to normal................the rest is history. After leaving public school I decided to train as a Chiropractor and even now some 40 years later I rarely suffer with my back, provided I am adjusted regularly.
My Education
I was born in December 1957 and I was brought up and privately educated in Surrey. My father was a Dentist and throughout my school years I had decided that "When I grow up I too will be a Dentist. That was until I was one grade short in Chemistry A level to enter Guys Hospital Dental school. Instead of retaking Chemistry A level I decided to take a year off and then go to the "Anglo-European College of Chiropractic" and become a Chiropractor. The best decision of my life.
I had always struggled at school but at AECC I excelled! I was learning something exciting in the knowledge that once qualified I would be able to help people in a way very few in England could at the time.
The one subject I found most fulfilling was "Spinal Biomechanics" a topic covering how the spine works under normal circumstances and what happens when it goes wrong. It was taught for 3 of the 4 year course and at the end of the course you felt that you were "The Specialist"
My practice Philosophy is simple: "Relieve, Correct, Stabilise and Maintain"
On the first visit to the clinic there is a consultation and examination (which may or may not include X-rays), this enables me to understand the nature of your symptoms and identify the underlying cause of those symptoms.
The second visit is called "The Report of Findings." This visit gives me the opportunity to explain not only why you have the symptoms but also and more importantly the underlying cause of your complaint. I will explain how I am firstly going to treat in order to relieve the symptoms as soon as possible and how we are going to address the underlying cause of that complaint, which often takes a little longer that just alleviating the symptoms and may include seeing Clive Walker who is a specialist in sports and spinal rehabilitation.
My family
I am one of six children (2nd youngest) and I have always been very active. I played all sports at school and obtained a full sports scholarship to attend Public School based on my ability to play cricket and represented my county (Surrey) in 1975/6. I have skied every year since the age of four (except for 8 years while at public school and at AECC), I took up SCUBA diving in the late 1980's and latterly play golf, currently with a handicap of 10.
I married in 1990 however, unfortunately divorced in 2000. I am not currently married although I have a partner Jayne, who I have known and shared my life with since my divorce and we enjoy traveling, skiing and playing golf together.
My favourite places on this planet are the Maldives - the closest you get to nature, and Zermatt in Switzerland - the closest you get to Heaven. Both places I will continue to visit.
Health Habits
I am generally in good health and in 28 years of practice I have not had one day off sick!
I try to exercise regularly and eat well. I play golf 3-4 times a week which involves walking 15 miles a week.
As I stated earlier, I suffered with my lower back as a teenager however, in recent years do not suffer, I have my back checked regularly and adjusted every month.
